Looking for some local info. Have been avoiding the South side road as one section near Killin was really bad and was wondering if it has been repaired??

Now that the Glen Lochay road over to the top of Glen Lyon is now impassable to a road bike I am looking for another road to complete a loop.

  • I've ridden twice (2012 and 2013) over the road from Glen Lyon (the little town at Pubil) south to Kennock, and back west to Killin. Both times I basically started in Killin, went north, over the Glen Lawers road (nice climb, epic descent), then west up Glen Lyon (stunning ride) and then over the admittedly pretty dodgy road from Pubil. It's definitely rideable, although the next time I'm in the area I would ride in the opposite direction - climbing on dodgy tarmac weaving around potholes is a lot easier than descending through them, and the road down into Pubil is totally fine. There is a gate - unlocked - just above Kennock.
Another great loop is from Aberfeldy to Kenmore, then South to Loch Freuchie, and either back the same way or back up the A826.

I circulated the Loch last September on my road bike. Yes some rough areas but no worse than other parts of the country.

In June I did the high pass over to Glen Lyon on my MTB. Wouldn't attempt on the road bike. I also did Ardeonaig to Killin in June on the MTB. No real problem on the road bike I reckon.

The Glen Lyon road was so nice I'd be tempted to do it on a go/come back basis.

    Thanks for replies :o

I know all the roads around that neck of the woods and my route used to be coming up from Crieff via the Sma Glen then over Glen Quaich to Kenmore. I used to go up Glen Lyon then over from Bridge of Balgie then Killin, Glen Lochay then back over to Glen Lyon then all the way down to Aberfeldy then up the Birk's Brae and back to Crieff.

Sometimes for variety and extra miles I used to nip over Schehallion(or however its spelt) round the Rannoch and then back over Glen Quaich the hard way.

I usually ride the south side west to east where possible as it's not as fast so the poor road can't cause problems ...

Been doing that for 13 years now ... You'd have thought they would have fixed the road by now (although the north side has had a fair amount of work done as it is the main Kenmore-Killin road ...

Did it in May, rideable but not pleasant in places. Worth it for the inland climb/descent at the end.
Condor Super Acciaio, Record, Deda, Pacentis.
Curtis 853 Handbuilt MTB, XTR, DT Swiss and lots of Hope.
Genesis Datum Gravel Bike, Pacentis (again).
    Genesis Equilibrium Disc, 105 & H-Plus-Son.

    Mostly Steel.
  • Thanks for the input guys, as I plan to ride the loch loop or the glen lyon loop described above, next weekend.
