What purpose does the "string", that runs through the rear brake cable holes, serve?

The string is to pull the rear brake cable through the frame, the cable goes inside the string and grips on it. Keep this string as when you take an old cable out you pull the string through to fit next cable.

    Thanx
I sort of thought that it might be something like that. All I could think about while watching him try to thread the wire completely through the sting was "Wait a minute, this ain't completely right".

Alternate method - piece of thread goes in one hole, attach hoover hose to other hole and suck through, tie thread to cable and pull cable through. You may need to use a piece of string after thread and before cable for better grip.
