So... I've been commuting on and off for 4 or 5 months now. About 7.5 miles in and out of Cambridge, and driving the rest. The bike goes into the car and i drive the next 28 miles in each direction.
I had a longer recreational ride through some country lanes on Sunday and thought... Why the heck am i risking life and limb dodging traffic on the A10 when there are some perfectly beautiful (if slightly longer) routes into and out of Cambridge. Today i tried the first one. 15.5 miles in from Melbourn, Royston. It. Was. Amazing!
I found that not being in the traffic meant i felt the pressure of time less. I was totally not fussed about my Strava. Totally chilled. Enjoying the views, the sun and the quiet roads. I got into the office about 20 mins later than uisual, but full of the joys of life and buzzing having got a good ride in. Best of all, I'm feeling strong and have noticed for the first time that I'm considerably fitter than I was when i started commuting. Very happy boy!
Thanks all on here for the inspiration to get started, and to push it out further. I'm saving money, getting fit and LOVING being on the bike! Here's a wee image of this mornings commute.

But what if a car wants to use the road, you'll be unable to get immediately out of the way, that's just irresponsible and dangerous!

It took me five months to get round to doubling the commute (and I haven't made it back to the car yet!). Gimme another 5 months!0 -
