After a new Hardtail to compliment my full suss. Be mainly used for roads to some wooded trails and used during the winter months. Been looking at a 26inch Cube Aim disc and the 29er. Test rode the 29er and was impressed felt light compared to my Current Hardtail a Carrera vulcan.

    Upgrade the Vulcan?

Too uneconomial to repair and I want a slacker frame.
  • Or would just buying a new Vulcan or kraken be better than the ones listed. Just after something fresh and new.

    Are they slacker though?

I think the new Vulcan and Kraken are 68 degree head angle and have 120mm forks. My current one looks very old school geometry wise. It's the 2009 Vulcan.

Don't expect SS to recommend a 29er

Budget £450 max. Just need a hardtail that works for now.

I could probably stretch to that. Looked at the Bantu is that any cop?

Why not just fit 120mm forks in the Vulcan which will make it slacker (2009 Fury with the same frame was 120mm)......You could create a much nicer bike with £250 added to your Vulcan than you could buying new for £400 and selling it (circa £150)!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Will the frame take 120mm forks.

Yeah but that's new forks, say some cheap air ones a Suntour Epicon RLD 120mm that's £150 new replacement front mech as its bent beyond repair another £30 quid, crankset and bottom bracket, new cassette, new chain, new headset.

I could get a Rockrider 5.3 for £329 take the brakes off mine (Slx disc brakes) and the Tora SL and then I have a slightly slacker bike that's brand new.

The Rockrider is not going to be slacker than what you have - none of your choices are looking at them.

From looking in the flesh it looks it the seat the tube from the pedals to where it connects to the top tube is shorter on the RR and even Girlfriends Cannondale Sl5.

Which makes no difference to head angle.

  • So do I just sort my current bike out then? It's not done a humongous amount of miles but LL Bury says it needs new chain. Bottom bracket, headset etc. It's probably done less than 700 miles since 2009

What do you think it needs?

Possibly new headset, I've adjusted it as it was loose under braking. Now it just feels a bit gritty. New chain defo. It's on the Original transmission x4 . New front mech as I'm stuck on middle ring permanantly. Dog has chewed gear cables. No play in bottom bracket area though.

So around £40 for bits if you DIY.
