Mini pump - blocked?? HELP

Hi, sorry for the noob question:
I have a mini-pump, it pumps, but on the back/fill stroke it crates a vacuum /lets the air in very slowly. I have stripped it down, and can't see where the air is supposed to enter??? It has two parts for the presta/schraeder adaptor, then a part with 2 o-rings - inside this there is a small rubber diaphragm and a "ring" to keep the diaphragm in place.
Hopefully if you have one of these it all makes sense. But where is the air intake to the pump tube?? The diaphragm stops the air from coming out of the tyre, but I can't see anywhere else for the air to enter. Sorry if i sound a bit thick, it must be a sunday!! P.S. It's a Halfords, but they all look similar.

P.S. Live in Kingston. Very funny today to see sooo many car drivers trying to navigate the roads. Like, it's only been advertised for 5 months!!
