Anyone care to recommend me a 29er fs xc bike for around the two grand mark, ideally with the across the frame type rear shock (sorry, don't know the technical name for it)

I have the 2012 version with 26" if you're after XC I would recommend, great value0 -

This is not as good value but still a good bike
But with the £600 change in the Vitus you could upgrade0 -
My shortlist for short travel 29er XC bikes is (no particular order):
Scott Spark 950
Marin Rift Zone XC7 (winner of xc shoot out in this months What Mountain Bike)
Whyte M109
Giant Anthem X1 (What Mountain Bike Trail Bike of the Year 2013, even though its an XC bike)0 -

You're spending 2k on a mountain bike and your main buying criteria is that roughly horizontal rear shocks look a bit cool? Sheesh
Aye that's right, get over it, and yersell.0 -
You should get a specialized, horizontal shock and huge choice of designer accessories.0

That's what I said earlier, you can get a Camber for £2k0 -
Are you planning on hanging it on your living room wall or riding it?
You cant see what it looks like when you are riding.
Looks are the last thing I worry about, thats why I ride a Nukeproof!Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Some shit suggestions so far folks :roll:0

If you can live with a vertical shock the Giant Anthem X 29er is an amazingly good ride and proper fast, if you want to ride a bit harder then the Trance X 29 is extremely good.
Both bikes pedal like a hardtail, soak up hits nicely, climb with minimal effort and are very well built.
If you must have a horizontal shock then the Orange Gyro should do you.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

I was in my LBS yesterday (Giant dealer) and we discussed both those bikes, he reckoned my type of riding was best suited to the Anthem, but if I do go down the road of vertical shocks, I can't see past the Canyon 8.9, as I already own a 7.9 Canyon HT0 -
I really dont like Canyons rear suspension. It just feels a bit crude and blows through travel in compressions and big hits.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

Would you care to expand on that ?0 -
Pedals well but a bit wallowy in low frequency compression. Doesn't have enough of a rising rate for me.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
