Getting kid into rear bike seat.

OK, I've looked all over for advice on this and can't find any.

How do I safely load a 17kg child into a rear-mounted Hamax with no other adult present?

Simple as that really. Do I straddle the bike and twist round? Do I lean the bike against a wall?

Any suggestions appreciated!

  • Get a kick stand. You shouldn't leave the kid sitting in there supported by just one of these but it makes getting in and out easier. Also 17kg sounds pretty heavy to be using a child seat.

  • Actually, I think he is more like 15-16kg (he's 3 in October) - the Hamax seat is rated to 22kg so should be ok?

I'll investigate kickstands - not sure if they will fit onto our MTBs though.
  • I might be getting confused about weights. I'm sure your little'uns fine.

My wife and I both have one of these

Me on a road bike, her on an MTB. Can't recommend them highly enough. Mount on the chain/seat stays.

  • I should say neither of ours have disc brakes, so that might be an issue for you.

I normally lean mine against a wall, but this does depend on there being a wall to hand.
