Specialized Tarmac Sport Vs Giant Defy 1

Im going to upgrade from a Specailized Tricross to something a bit quicker, but also fairly comfortable as I will be doing a few endurance events.
Has anyone got any experience of the above? Does the Tarmac ride stiff?
The bike shop are telling me its all about the frame as the Tarmac has a full carbon frame and forks whereas the Giant is Aluminium. Im not really bothered about upgrading components in the future, so would welcome anybodys experience or advice on the above..
