Good TdF from Pete Kennaugh, but do we have a future GT winner?

(Yes, yes, I know. Another Team Sky thread, won't go down well with some. But you don't have to post now do you...)

    I really hope so

He says himself that he needs to improve his TTing.

Just needs to stay away from the distraction of the Rio Olympics and thoughts of a second shot at TP gold

Too early to say GT winner. Contender hopefully. Someone who can climb with the contenders almost certainly.

He was a mess in the final few days of the Tour, and he said this came a year or two earlier than he suspected, so plenty of room for growth. Hopefully riding it this year will have done him the world of good, both physically and motivationally - he seemed to enjoy the whole thing.

Based on what he said whilst at the TdF, he's got good craic also, so if he was up there on GC it would lead to some good interviews.

He has no filter during interviews. He just says whatever comes into his head. Hopefully that isn't PRd out of him.

His interview after coming 3rd in the Nationals in Abergavenny back in 2009 (having just turned 20) was a cracker, he certainly wasn't scared to lay into a few of the old hands he felt had decided to settle for the minor placings rather than put an effort into catching House.

No, it was live when they did the prize presentations. I don't think there was TV coverage that year but there may be something on You Tube.

A great rider and a good Tour...but... I think we are at the stage where "potential" is realised. The Olympics are gone and he is no GT virgin. I'd like to see Sky give him some free rein at a one weeker somewhere

Yeah, agree. He's doing the Vuelta so probably looking at next season for a spot of off-the-leash

i think he has as much chance as anybody, before wiggo and froome emerged as GT contenders there was talk of Pete being the first British winner for le Tour, who'd have thought we would have two by 2013. What ever direction he takes I hope he is successful I remember doing the National Champs as a junior against him and even then his post race interviews were good value, I think he could win a hilly classic at some stage has a fair kick on him for such a small guy
  • Love the guy, worked his socks off in the tour.

Won't be the Tour if Quintana has anything to do with it.

That's the thing. He may still be a young talent with room to grow, but Van Garderen and Talansky are only one year older, and Quintana, Kwiatkowski, Pinot and Aru one year younger. Kelderman and Dombrowski 2 years younger.

But Quintana can't TT, so he isn't going to win the Tour either...

Age isn't that relevant; Kennaugh is barely a toddler in terms of his road cycling development. This really is his first year riding without at least one eye on the track.

One of my favourite parts of the Tour this year was seeing him really REALLY bury himself on Ventoux and then go backwards like he was in a time travelling DeLorean.
I thought he was just gonna topple over when he peeled off he was so done.
Could watch that bit again and again.
    25th August 2013 12hrs 37mins 52.3 seconds 238km 5500mtrs FYRM Never again.

Yes, he was absolutely toasted at that point. IIRC he finished 77th overall, I wonder how high up he could have finished if he'd been riding for himself?

He he. He said in an interview that it took 1km to get into his stride again, and then he quite enjoyed the rest of the climb :)

Bit like that when I rode it. Except it took me 25km to get into my stride. Quite enjoyed the last few hundred metres. :D

In the 40km points race at today's Revolution meeting Kennaugh lapped the field 7 times

Likely to be BT Sport. I think they showed Round 2 highlights last month.

Was spectacular to watch. Glasgow + Rio in the back of any riders head at the moment.
