Needing an easier gear on the hills, My bike has a double 39/53 & came with a 12-12 rear, going to a 11-28 or 12-30 for some more options, will also be buying new KMC chain. So on sizing the chain there seems to be a few methods, large/small and align the rear mech verticly, large/large (through rear mech) till nearly tight, large/large (excluding rear mech) and add 2 links..... Cripes is there an idiots guide? cos much as I like to do bike maintenance myself, I may opt for LBS.

Oh & while I'm here is 1 link literally 1, or 1 & 1/2

Or just small small with the slack taken up. If you have that right, and there are problems at the big - big end you need a bigger mech!

"large/large (excluding rear mech) and add 2 links"

That's what I do. (2 links is 2 inners and 2 outers) That way you know if you do end up selecting big / big you're not going to drag your rear mech into the cassette.

If the mech then won't take up the slack in the small / small combo then something else is amiss.
