Which new helmet?

Had a bit of an off on Friday which resulted in a broken collar bone and 7 cracks in my helmet.

So I need a new one.

Was previously using a Giro Hex. Do you reckon the helmet coped well? Was doing roughly 25mph at the time, landed clean on my head and shoulder. No head injuries what so ever apart from abrasion mark's. The helmet is still in one piece just cracked.

Should I get another or is there better/tougher ones to be had?

The Hex was comfy. I have tried a 661 Recon but didn't like it at all and I've always liked the look of the Fox Flux and Striker. Love the look on the Urge's but will there be ventilation issues?

Cheers guys.

That's what it's supposed to do - break instead of your head breaking.
Helmets should be chucked away after an accident even if they look fine. Done the job and absorbed the shock.

Yeah I know that, looks like another Hex it is then. Was expecting it to be much worse.

I'm a big lad and was a very hard landing lol.

My mate has just bought one of those Urge helmets and said it was well good. Looks like a snowboarder's helmet and gives coverage. It's really light too but not much in the way of vents. He didn't say his head was getting hot though, which we put down to the lightness of it.

That x-ray made me feel funny.

Dropping the dosages seems as there is barely any pain there (Apart from getting out of bed in the morning) (Oh and when I went to the chemist earlier on and their automatic door closed into my shoulder as I was walking through) lol

Helmet or collar bone? That's two broken collar bones in a week on here. Who's gonna complete the "things come in threes" set?..

As for the helmet - you're sitting there with a broken collar bone, but not a fractured skull, so I'd say it did it's job just fine.
  • The helmet did its job well. Thats a nasty displaced break( I am a nurse ) .watch booze and codeine , ok at night if you want to sleep. And eat plenty of roughage, codeine can really bung you up .Perfectly safe to take ibuprofen as well to cut down inflammation. Bestof luck ....if it's any consellation I am black and blue in varing places from recent offs but new tyres have prevented any more .

Yeah I don't drink much anyway and have read horror stories of drinking alcohol whilst taking codeine.

Going to try use this off time to work out a good diet, Don't want to out the weight I've lost from biking back on while I'm off the saddle.

Got some fresh orange juice to help stop constipation.

Only slept for an hour or two Friday night (I did it Friday afternoon) but Saturday and Sunday night I did a solid 8 hours.

1 codeine every 5 hours now but tomorrow may try it out taking nothing. Should be fine!

Go to see a specialist on the 12th.

I hardly slept for weeks when I broke mine. They gave me some diclofenac, but that didn't seem to do much. I use cocodamaol (codeine and paracetamol) when I get a migraine (which, thankfully, is rare these days) - makes me feel nauseated, but works well for pain relief.

I never got a copy of my x ray though, I was robbed, lol. I did get a few grand though, which was nice. I'll see if I can dig out the post break picture and scan it - the whole shoulder and left of my chest was covered in an impressive array of technicolour bruising.

The doc who put my sling on sneaked me the X Ray pic in return for me writing down my PinkBike link so he could see the recording of the crash. Unfortunately, the file is corrupt due to the camera left recording for hours during and after the crash and the memory card is only 2GB.

    GUTTED is an understatement.

 Is that strictly ethical, lol? What caused the crash?

On the upside, in my case, the radiographer was a rather sexy young blonde lady, and I had the good fortune to crash with Harrogate as my nearest A&E department, so got to go to the nice quiet posh people's hospital, instead of the horror of A&E at Leeds or Bradford.

I was Huddersfield Royal, Wasn't bad at all. In and out in 1 hour.

Lack of skill/concentration and bad line choice lol.

Aye, those will do it, lol. Mine was a Scottish OAP in a Corsa. I've never sampled Huddersfield A&E, but Harrogate on a quiet Sunday afternoon was about as pleasant as a hospital experience gets, no waiting, and no scummy types, lol.

Bradford was good when i had my appendix out, I was away with the fairies ha.

Learn from your mistakes ey, massive shame as it was a great ride but not very technical just I messed up big time.

I hate BRI, horrible place (especially when they stitched my lip and gum with no anaesthetic). I hate Bradford generally though, lol.

I had a similar crash in a Hex a few weeks ago. Mine resulted in me not remembering 30 minutes of my life and the right side of the helmet cracked in 5 places.

Huge bruise on my noggin but no lasting damage.

Was suitably impressed with the Hex so bought another one.

Comfy, cheap (ish) and saved me once so was an easy replacement :)

The black camo one looks good. All Terrain Cycles at Salts Mill stock Fox, if you want to try one on.
