Subway or Crossfire

I know this topic has been done to death, and I've checked out the stickies but looking for a bit of advice
I'm looking to get a decent bike for a 5 mile commute to work, mostly over roads but some bike trails (nothing exciting, more a woodland cycle path)
The Carerra Crossfire is on the Halfords site for £299, while the subway can be had for £199. Sadly I have to go with halfords as its the C2W scheme
What are peoples general opinions, specifically on the newer models. Ideally I'd like as many gears as possible as although my commute isn't far, it does feature a massive hill on the return journey.

For not much more money the Voodoo Marasa is a LOT better bike (Halfords still)...29inch wheels (smoother faster rolling) and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
