£2K FS - what would you buy?

After following my son all round Dalby this weekend (him on a FS Stump Jumper, me on a Marin hardtail) I've realised that my time has come to upgrade to FS. Have opened negotiations with the wife to spend around £2K, but wondering what people with far more knowledge than me would recommend as a good buy. Will be used for XC, mainly red routes with the occasional black thrown in for added fear/fun. Thanks in advance for pointers/advice
