As I only get to go out on the bike in the evenings and often the sun is starting to go down on my way home, I need a rear LED light to make me a bit more visible- need some recommendations. Also have long typically do batteries last or is it best to go rechargeable?

i usually only turn on half the leds as even that is really bright, it's done over three years with no mudguards, uses 2 aa cells, i get a year out of a set

I've got two of the Moon Shield 60. Very bright (60 lumens) and USB rechargeable. Lasts for 4 to 6 hours on flash, depending on temperature (shorter in cold weather).

Had many (+ve!) comments from cars, bikers, etc on how visible it is from a distance. Also the flexi strap fits on the seatpost/frame easily and also my helmet (feed it through the rear vents).
