I know I'll get caned for this but XTC did a fantastically original version of this on their debut album 'White Noise' - for those like me just too young to latch onto the original (or the Hendrix version) when they first appeared the XTC 'new wave' version rocks.

But its not the 'definitive' version by any means........yours is of course...............

    I'll get me coat....................

  • Step on - The Happy Mondays

Now there's a cover that jumped up and down on the original if ever there was one. Instant good mood at the first chord.

Totally. There are very musicians out there who claim to be total one-offs. IMHO, she's one.

Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelly - the fourth time MGM had used the song in a movie. One of the previous versions was by Judy Garland. Much parodied since as well.

Never heard that version before, so just been to Youtube to hear it.
All I can say is that you should've gone to the audiometry version of Spec Savers.

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (originally Bob Dylan)

The other obvious Dylan cover: 'Mr Tambourine Man' - The Byrds.
Song to the Siren - This Mortal Coil (or, more to the point, Liz Fraser's voice)

Also 'You and your Sister' - This Mortal Coil (this time it's Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9z5KNmWopU

While we're on 4AD bands: 'Cry Baby Cry' - Throwing Muses:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZxoEwqmcCk

(the Beatles cover - confusingly they have an original song with the same title).

Kristin Hersh from the same band has also done Led Zep's 'When the Levee Breaks', which I'd rather hear than the original:

How about 'Baby One More Time' - Travis (!):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IpanyupNCA

Or 'Everybody's Talkin' - Fred Neil (which is an original, not a cover, but much less famous than the Harry Nilsson version everyone knows):

Another obvious one, 'Twist and Shout' - The Beatles:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVlr4g5-r18

Honourable mentions for Siouxsie and the Banshees, maybe not quite definitive, but close:

    Dear Prudence - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwVURcWaFRM
    The Passenger - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nAON-MwUPY

Nouvelle Vague has whole albums full of covers that often top the originals:

    I Melt With You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=516ZUtOeWMg
    Too Drunk To F*ck - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hapufz1NFkY
    Ophelie - http://vimeo.com/34388345

Don't play the last one at a polite dinner party if any of your guests speak French...

I reckon that one's worth a Definitive stamp of approval.

Got to say after listening to the Tears for Fears original again, I prefer it because of the whole feeling of paranoia and 'madness'. It's much more on the edge than the Gary Jules version which is just straight maudlin.

Blinded by the Light- mannfred man. ( Bruce Springsteen original )

Racing in the street - roger Taylor ( another Bruce Sringsteen)

    +1

Sex Pistols - No Fun. Knocks Iggy's version into a cocked hat.
