2x10 for a cheapskate

So, looking to build up a cotic soul. I'll be half inching most of the bits from my current hardtail, but I'd quite like 2x10 after having it on another bike, and I'd also like one of these newfangled clutch mechs.

A quick gander on wiggle and crc has a setup of xt shifters, xt crankset, slx shadow+ rear mech and xt front and an slx 11-32 cassette costing 300 quid. I'll be having a hunt myself obviously, but can anyone give me a steer as to where to save money on a 2x10 setup (short of transplanting my existing 3x9 drivetrain wholesale)

German stores tend to have the best prices for Shimano: rosebikes.co.uk, bike-discount.de, actionsports.de. Merlin have been pretty close on price recently too. Personally, I don't really see the need for the XT chainset over an SLX.

Quite, SLX is functionally the same as XT, only very slightly heavier.

    Planet X n2a
    Genesis Core 20

It's only a tenner more than the slx one and is shiny :)

I don't see what is wrong with a Deore group - outstanding VFM.

Will last longer and be cheaper than anything SRAM.

Only problem might be is finding the new 6?? groupset which includes the +mech, but you could buy that separately and sell the other.

If you want to keep it cheap then Deore has moved to 10 speed now why not go for that?

Don't bother with XT front mech. Front mechs are all pretty much the same, so get a cheap one.

And gained the clutch mech. Sold, to the man after the shiny green Soul!

This. Just keep your 3x9 one. It will work ok.

You'll be lucky to find Deore at a sane price in 2x10 with a clutch for a while. All the cheap groupos are OEM stuff on the grey market, Deore wont arrive for a while. You should be able to find a full XT groupset for around 300 though if you shop about. At that price its not worth buggering about with anything else I reckon.

    + some other bikes.
  • Scuppered by the lack of new deore cranks on the market. Merlin don't know when they are getting them in.

Dilemma. Wait for deore and spend savings on alternative bling (maybe a dropper post or other finishing kit or put towards a wheelset), or get slx now.

What about the German websites eg Rose bikes or bikediscount etc... Delivery from bikediscount only took a couple days to arrive so quicker than Wiggle ;-)

    bikediscount have got them: http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k1175/ ... black.html

I went for the SLX double from them, but it was really down to aesthetics.
Too many bikes, not all fully built.
