Tyre pressures

Not been road biking for very long... Is it normal to need to pump my tyres up before pretty much every ride? I was on the bike first thing Tuesday morning and i'm going out today and they need 'topping up' again. They're by no means flat, but they're a little soft and I feel I need to put a bit of air in before riding.

Never have to pump up my MTB tyres this often, but I guess the pressures are higher in the road bike so maybe have greater potential for air leaking out (of the valve maybe??) whilst the bike is stood?

Is it normal?

  • I run mine at 100 psi front and 120 rear and find I need to top them up maybe once a week or every 100 miles or so - every day doesn't sound right to me. How flat are they though - maybe a very slow puncture?

Well, its not every day, i'm talking more like every three days. But nowhere near 100miles, more like 50.

They're nowhere near flat, i'd probably be ok riding on them, they just feel like they need a bit more....

Hit a speed bump or a pothole at any kind of speed and you're risking a pinch flat if the tyres are soft.
    Is the gorilla tired yet?

Yeah, I know. That's why I check them and put a bit of air in before I go out. I don't ride them soft, just saying they're not unrideably (if that's not a word then it should be!! ) flat.

I check mine and add a bit of air before pretty much every ride.

That sounds a bit more like normal - when I first started I checked and topped up before every ride but now I just do it by feel i.e. if I am out on a ride and they feel a bit soft when riding I top em up before the next time (if I remember!). It works out for me around once a week or so and by the time I top them up sometimes they may have dropped as low as 85F and 95R which is still perfectly rideable and is actually good for a light rider (sadly not me!) so I top em up to 100 and 120. From what you say I think what you have sounds pretty normal.
