The fsa vero can't be bought any more. Online retailers who say they can soon find they can't supply it.
I need to replace my chainset. All I want is a similar chainset: 9sp, square taper fitting, 50/34. Most seem to be 8sp or 10 sp and I'm not sure what's compatible. LBS told me it's hard to find a 9sp with a square taper fit. Looks like I need to change the bb too.
Any suggestions for similar chainsets?

Are square taper bb kinda old hat now?

You can still get the Vero Chainset, it's not available from the supplier till middle of August. (Recent question came up at work). The customer ended up replacing with a Sora HTII Chainset.

Is that the Sora 3550? I had seen that but was worried that it wasn't a square taper fit?

Replace BB at the same time. RRP all in is around £100. Could probably get it a lot cheaper online.

I'd only replaced the bb recently. Seems a shame to do it again.
What about this as a replacement - cheap and cheerful?

My bb is 110.5mm. 3.5mm is a big difference here. If anyone has a view on the sunrace I'd be interested.

For something really cheap but decent quality, albeit heavy, have a look at the Shimano FC-2350. An incredible £25 at Rose Bikes (German shop), though they’ll charge a bit for shipping.

This looks fine except that all sellers say it is for 8 speed. Is it that easy to use this with a 9 speed cassette?

Basically, if I want to change my chainset I'll have to change my bottom bracket too.
I'm off to Evans this am to see what I can afford.

I've gone for the Sora 3550. With the BB the total cost was around £85, including the fact that I needed to get a new BB tool.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I'll be back when I can't fit it!

Hell fire it's all on and fitted. I assume I will fall over, now that I am using SPD-SL pedals for the first time, which was the initial impetus for all of this, since old pedals were seized into the cranks.
I'm off to try them out.
