Hello guys,

Wondering if you could help.
It's getting round to building up a winter bike time.
last winter I rode a giant TCR alliance.
This year I'd like a dedicated training bike with mudguards and the lot.
I have a Steel road frame sitting in the garage which is the perfect size for me.
The only problem I have is rear wheel spacing.
The frame has 126mm rear dropout spacing.
I'm looking at fitting Athena 11 Speed to it so need to space the frame out slightly for this to be able to work.
Any suggestions?

Next question, I have a Mirage 10 speed rear mech, 11 speed everything else, will this work or do I need to buy another 11 speed mech? there must be a way of working round this?

Any help would be welcomed.

this is the frame I have, I'll be stripping paint off it for a full respray

Its 501 so it can be cold set. I'd take it to a local (good) bike shop and have them do it. Sheldon Brown describes how you can do it yourself, if you feel capable.

10 speed mech will probably work I reckon.

As always Sheldon has an answer

Rear mech I think you'd need 11x jockey wheels at the least, worth a punt.

Respacing is not difficult per se, but then you need to realign the dropouts and mech hanger and you need tools for that (I have them, if you are local).
Athena is not a good winter groupset, the exposed bearings in the cranks will die in no time if used in winter. I would stick to a traditional square taper chainset... chances are the one you already have on works fine with 10 speed groupsets, might be a bit trickier with 11, as the chain is even narrower.

Next question: the 10 and 11 speed Campagnolo rear derailleurs are slightly different and respond slightly differently to the pull. Most of the times you will get away with it, but the shifting will not be as good as it can be.

Have you thought of keeping it as friction shifting? Less hassle, especially in winter. I have a friend who wants to sell front/rear Dura Ace derailleurs and downtube shifters series 7400 if interested

sorry that is the frameset I have but not mine, should have mentioned that.
I won't be running an athena chainset, I'm on the lookout for a record or chorus square taper alloy chainset.
I should be able to space it myself looking at sheldons explanation.

Agree, but Sheldon doesn't mention the dropouts and hanger have to be realigned, otherwise they will be at an angle, which leads to a few problems and crap shifting, if used with 10-11 speed drivetrains. Do you have the tools to do that?
Square taper Chorus/Record can be an expensive affair, don't rule out Stronglight... cheap and cheerful and pretty good stuff

I live with a Sky cycling team mechanic so shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I'm looking for Record/Chorus purely because they're some of the nicest looking chainsets around.
If not I'll settle for using the C record chainset I have laying around I think

You have no idea how annoying it is, to have a 531 Professional frame, which uses 753 stays, so can't be cold set. Grrr would so lovely to fit a modern 11 speed gruppo.
