I have a 2012 Giant TCR Composite 3 and I am looking at upgrading some of the drivetrain. When looking at the chainset the one it came with is "FSA MegaExo, Press Fit" and I am looking at upgrading to Shimano Ultegra 6700 Hollowtech II Double Chainset (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-ultegra-6700-hollowtech-ii-double-chainset/) but this would need the Shimano Ultegra 6700 Bottom Bracket Cup Set (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-ultegra-6700-bottom-bracket-cup-set/) but I’ve been told on the Wiggle Q&A that this won’t fir my frame.

What options do I have to upgrade the chainset and BB?

If the BB that fitted is a Shimano pressfit then a Ultegra chainset will slot straight in.

The 6700 BB you mention is for threaded frames - yours is a pressfit.

Thanks for that. I can't find information about exactly what BB the FSA MegaExo, Press Fit is. Does anyone know what spline type it is and if it would be compatible with the Shimano Ultegra 6700 Hollowtech II Double Chainset and if not what BB I would need for it to fit?

This type of BB doesn't have splines, they consist simply of bearings in cups which are pressed into the BB shell. They take cranksets in which the axle is attached to the chainring crank / spider, and it's simply pushed through the bearings when installing. Some FSA BBs will take a Shimano Hollowtech II crankset. If yours doesn't, you'd need to remove it and fit a press-fit Shimano BB or equivalent.
  • Hey there. I've got the same bike and I replaced the chainset with a 105. If you've got the same chainset as mine had, which is an FSA Omega, you'll have to change the BB as the Omega has a 19mm axle and the Shimanos have 24mm. If it's the same frame as mine it has a BB86 press fit bottom bracket so check that the BB you buy is compatible with 86.5mm shells. FYI I bought a Shimano SM-BB71, which is supposed to be Ultegra level, or you can get the BB91, which is Dura-Ace level, for about a tenner more.

Changing the BB is something I'd leave to the LBS if you're unsure. I did it myself with a home made press but the proper tool costs way more than getting it done by someone else.

    Cheers.
