TBH, I'm not sure many do, and I'm one who doesn't. I've heard references to the "deep internet" and such like, but in a simplistic way have regarded "the internet" and "the world wide web" are largely synonymous.
Can someone explain in (I hope) simple terms what the differences are between the internet, the www, and what google searches?
TIA

I will now lie you to by omission and over-simplification. It'll be close enough.
The internet is all traffic and services. It includes the WWW (websites), email, newsgroups, FTP, DNS (which just about every major service on the internet makes use of), and a whole bunch of other "stuff".
The WWW is one service of the internet. It's used to deliver webpages (like the one you're reading now) to your client (probably a "normal" web browser on a PC/phone/tablet). The webpages are simply HTML (special text) files that are served out by web servers. All the web servers on the internet together make up the WWW, and there's a large amount of interlinking that takes you from one page on a site to e.g. YouTube because you clicked on a link. Those webpages don't have to be served by a webserver (you can save the page to your computer and open it in a web-browser later) but they generally are.
Google and other web-searches simply "read" the publicly-available pages on the WWW and index them. It knows about "new" pages because those new pages will generally be linked from stuff it's already seen.
{edit #2}: If I create a new webpage on a new webserver, it's not that all likely it'll be found by Google etc. I could feasibly create multiple pages, all linking to each other, but if no-one tells Google that those pages exist (either by linking to them or by telling Google to "index this page") then it's not likely to get added to Google's vast database.
{edit}: Google also indexes other services besides websites, but if you "Google for something" you'll almost certainly be asking Google to search its index of webpages.Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0 -
