Sideways 'play' in 105 STI shifters

Hi there,
Just got the new (2014) Giant Defy 1, and I have a question about adjusting the 105 shifters...
Basically, there is quite a bit of sideways 'play' in the rear shifter lever - i.e. I need to move it a fair few degrees before it engages with the shifting mechanism (for shifting to larger cogs on the cassette). On the front shifter this is not the case, nor was it so much on my old RSX shifters.
My question is, can this be adjusted? It would be nice if it engaged as soon as the lever is pushed. I can't get my head around whether it's a cable tension issue or something else.
(One day I will take apart an old STI system to properly understand how they work!)
Cheers!

Assuming it's not rattly loose then I think it's just part of the design, the last couple of generations of Shimano levers are well-known for having a long-sweep action. I'm not sure of the point of or the cause of the dead zone at the start of the sweep but both my Ultegra and Dura-Ace levers have it.0
