First MTB purchase - Narrowed it down but cannot choose

Hi,
Looking to buy a decent hardtail mountain bike for some off road trails and long rides.
After prolonged research into the components etc I've narrowed it down to two models, betweeen which I cannot really choose.
Cannondale Trail SL 5 2012
Carrera Vengeance 2012
Found the Cannondale (new) at a local bike shop with a good discount, but it is still about £80 more expensive than the Vengeance. Is it really worth going for the Cannondale, as my untrained (but reasonably well-informed) eye cannot see much difference between the two.
Any verdict would be greatly appreciated! (btw reason I picked these two is that due to my height it really needs to be available in XL... )

for me Cannondale without a doubt....wouldn't ever want a bike from Halfords own brand !...but then I'm a tart lol0

Ok thanks for your responses. Hadn't even looked at Decathlon yet, but that does look good. Will try and find one for a test ride. Cheers0

If your after a good quality bike look on this site at carrera vulcan,good beginners bike from halfords.If not get a gt but i would say as i'm biased and love gts.0
