To Upgrade or to buy new

Hey folks

Finally registered to the forum after lurking for a while :)

So have a predicament. Technology's progressed and my bikes a little out of date now

So I'm thinking. Do I upgrade further. Or do I start afresh.

Current setup is a 2008 Kona Kikapu Deluxe ( www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/m ... luxe-11207 )

I've upgraded the below so far ;

Shifters xt rapid fire 9 speed (2008)
Xtr rear derailleur (2008)
Xtr front dérailleur (2008)
Shimano dx spds

Had an xt crank but a horrible accident with a very large rock made it go to the metallic graveyard under the stars :(

think this bikes done over 100,000ks so far. Was in my shed for a few years due to moving around but everything seems to work fine.

So. Has technology changed so much that I should just buy new and upgrade. Or can I still get away with upgrading my current?

If upgrading would be looking at an xt crank new front shocks and probably new rear

If buying new would I get a similar spec for a decent price?

Problem you have is getting decent 9 speed bits as all the good stuff is now 10spd from what I can see.

Better off keeping it as a pub bike or selling it and get yourself something new!

Yeah I noticed that when looking today. Wiggle still seems to stock a lot of the 9 speed. Otherwise I'm guessing absolutely everything needs replaced for 10spd?

Plenty of decent 9 speed stuff around, plus if you've upgraded all the gear bits already thst's not a problem. 10 speed cranks and chainrings work fine with 9 speed stuff.
Nothing wrong with the fork and shock unless they are broken.
And it's not exactly an ideal pub bike, so I would ignore the previous post.

There's nothing wrong with your bike.
Nothing "needs" to be replaced unless you believe that your fitness and technical skills have outgrown the technology...
10 speed isn't going to make you faster or happier.

    100.000 km since 2008 and "a few years in a shed"... :?:

Yeah used to do about 20-40 miles a day (lived at the bottom of a nice hill route around reservoirs etc) and then every weekend did a different 7stanes course (ranging 60-100k) back when I was a fitness freak. Then last two years I've not used it much apart from the odd 40mile mainly cycle track route. Recently got back into it and have been doing about 100k or so a week mainly cycle paths and a bit of hill tracks just to build my fitness up again.

Awesome il stick to replacing my crank with something that didn't cost £20 then :) (refused to pay for a decent one as was still gutted)
