Longer stroke shock ?

My Intense 5.5 EVP frame came with an old Manitou 4way Swinger that's seen better days so am looking for something to replace it with. The Swinger is 190mm x 50mm and I've been offered a Fox RP23 that is 190mm x 54mm, what difference is the extra 4mm stroke likely to make and more importantly if I fit it, could I do any damage to the bike.
Cheers

It will give you about 10mm more travel - this may cause the tyre to hit the frame at the end.
You can try running the shock as if it had 50mm stroke ie same percentage sag for 50mm. But big hits still may cause it to go into that travel rather than botom out like the old shock.0
