Does anyone know if it's possible to switch the chainrings between compact and standard without having to remove the crankset from the bottom bracket first?

    da9000 uses shimano's 4-bolt system, it's standard/compact compatible

op - i think you should be able to swap rings in-place, bear in mind you'll need to reposition the front mech as well
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny
  • Yes as other have said, the new bolt pattern of the 11spd cranks allow you to use any ring size by just swapping out the rings. No change in crank required.

Although they say its better for performance, it can't hurt production costs either!

You also need to remember that there is a limit to the number of teeth difference between the big and small ring that the front D will handle. Not sure what that difference is but would bet it's around 18 teeth. In other words running a 34-53
would be a 19 tooth difference and this may be too much for the front D to cope with.
    Key word is MAY.
