Brakes: Pads & Shoes

Very noob question, my mountain bikes v-brake brake pads are worn out (had to spin em 180 to get a few more days whilst I wait for new ones).
Might be using the wrong termonology...
Looking to upgrade to cartridges so its easier to change worn pads. So I need to buy some brake shoes? Are all shoes compatible with all cartridges? I'm specifically looking to use Kool Stops and im not sure what these fit into?
