Converting to 1 x 10 gearing

Hello I have a 2009 Specialised Hardrock Pro and have been wondering about converting to 1 x 10,
Currently running 3 x 8, I only ride for fun so mainly only use the middle gear!
Please give me your opinion, to gear ratios and also what parts would I need to change? I assume I can change the rear from 8 to 10?
Or is it time for a new bike?
Thanks

you can. all new gear train needed. with something like a 36T ring on the front. and associated chain retention devices.
but that depends on where you live and ride."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

1x9would be slightly cheaper as you could keep your rear mech.
For 1x10
New chain, rear mech, shifter, 10sp cassette.
For 1x9
New chain, shifter, 9sp cassette
For both
Single speed specific chainring (or can use your existing 32T middle) with single speed specific chainring bolts unless you use a bash - assuming your current crankset has removeable rings!
Chain retention
1/ Old front mech locked off on the stops (find out if you like it!)
2/ Inner and outer guide rings (outer can be a bash)
3/ Outer guide ring and n-gear jumps stop
4/ Chain guide such as Superstar plasma or similar.
Logically whatever cassette you use you'll use the widest range in that speed otherwise you may as well save money and have one speed less! (8 usually 11-32, 9 11-34, 10 11-36 - others can be found though)
I run 1x9 or my Kraken which is pretty similar to your 'rock (link in sig)Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Thanks for the info! Where would I get the bolts to convert single speed front, I'm running shimano Altus and a sram x5 rear thanks0

Does the crank even have bolts?
Even if it does, wouldn't it best best to maintain your gear range in case you need it?0 -
Single speed bolts can be had from various places, ebay is a good bet*, what crankset do you have? (not sure if Altus is the front mech or crankset) Does it have removeable rings?
