First 50 mile'r box ticked

Didn't plan on on going so far but the weather was nice, there was cool mist in the air which helped, after 30 miles I still felt good so just went for it, last 6 miles hurt a bit but still kept a decent avg speed of 17.3 and did it in 2hrs 56.
Don't think i'll do it very often I stay at my normal 35'ish mile rides.

I had only done 37 max until today, I only did to tick the box, I normally only ride for around 2hrs to just build up fitness for my MTB racing. Surprised I managed it really as I did 27 miles of hard forest riding yesterday.0

My tips are-
Eat well before, during and after. Even if riding for weight loss.
Be comfortable- good fitting bike (pro bike fit or fiddling over time)
Good shorts-my rule is, for every hour on the bike, pay £20 for shorts. (3 hour ride-£60 shorts, 1 1/2 hour £35 shorts) decent shorts are essential
Drink-LOTS- with a tab in it every now and again.
Most importantly(Enjoy yourself) - forget speed. Just aim for hours on saddle or mileage. After you've completed that target, take a note of the figures and then work on it in future.
Just my opinion and it's working for me, and I hope it helps somebody else too.0 -
The bit about eating seems counter intuitive. I know when I have been out for a ride I can easily have the munchies later an into the next day that can outweigh the good work by riding.
The particular bit that works for me is immediate post ride. Protein. I usually have a 2-egg omelette immediately I get in, and for something relatively small it REALLY makes a dent in the later appetite.

Ok so this was how I did it, went to bed and 12:30am got up at 6am, bowl of cereal and finished of the milk as it was nearly empty, one 500ml bottle on the bike with High 5 tab in it, ate an energy bar at about 20 miles and the rest of the way drank the water and about 10 Jelly babies :-) got home had a 500ml bottle of SIS Rego and a banana, went outside and started laying a patio and had a couple of salmon paste rolls and malt loaf for lunch. Body feels totally fine I am just a bit tired.0

Congrats. Its a great feeling isn't it. Next up metric century and then 100 miles. Did my first solo 100 yesterday.

Took it fairly easy in order to pace myself. Was flagging a little on the last 20 miles as it was the hilliest section but wasn't too wrecked when I got home.0 -
Well done on the 100, I won't be doing above 50 just don't need to, road cycling for me is secondary to mountain biking.0

Not that I'm an expert in the subject by any means but not sure why you'd think limiting calories after putting your body through a lengthy workout is something to be desired... for a typical 50-60 miler I'll eat a large bowl of porridge before starting out, a large sandwich mid-ride, 600ml bottle of energy drink, and what I can only assume is an 800-1000+ calorie rice salad concoction post ride. The only difference between now and when I used to eat less both during and post ride is I have more energy during the ride and recover a lot quicker after. (Congrats on your 50 miles btw)0

Just think, the more miles you put in on the road, the more time you can spend playing in the mud with your camelpak and helmet peak.0
