  • As many have said, you can chug along at whatever speed to you need, and rest when you need to, and you will of course then get there. BUT the limitation to this is the amount of water and food you have with you. In September, you can still fry on the open hill: I just did Col de Vence and had only 550ml of water. A second bottle and this would have been a doddle, but I was losing hydration fast by the second half and daren't stop for long.

    My first forays onto the long climbs were on an old bike set up for triathlon, and the gears were just too high, which was really hard work. Find a 7% grade and see if you spin up it without appreciable load on your knees. If so, you'll be fine.
