thank you for the reply, i could only see one review on the argos page but that could be from one of their ceo's for all i know. would be nice if one of the magazines had a look at it as like you said the gear on it is nice.
i wasnt going to spend that much on my first bike but was tempted by the value.
ahh well looks like the carrera tdf then :)
    thanks again

I decided to take the gamble and buy one! For two reasons 1- I have an argos card so it gave me 9 months to pay it off and 2- it's my first road bike so i have nothing to compare it to. I think it's a great bike for the money, it looks good, feels nice to ride and I can get some good speed out of it! (even managed a few top 10's on strava :D) I did make some small initial upgrades, things like a new shorter stem, more comfortable seat, better tires and black bar tape(personal preference) The only negative I can think of is the fact it only comes in two sizes 55 and 58cm and also the bike comes with non branded bog standard calliper brakes which aren't great (you want confidence in your brakes when your going 30+ mph :| ) Got myself some shimano 105's for a reasonable price. I've had this bike for 3 months and done almost 900 miles, I love this bike and would recommend it to anyone looking for their first carbon road bike.

^This - Good on you for buying the bike you liked instead of being a brand snob.
    Enjoy it.
  • To any doubters. These are produced by liyang of taiwan who have been around since 1968 and make carbon frames for a number of branded cycle types. Amongst them Mekk, carrera virago ( same bike just different branding) see road.cc best £900 to £1000 for a review. http://road.cc/content/news/63270-best-£900-£1000-road-bikes.
The components are sora rather than 105 but these can be easily upgraded as above. I had a specialised allez, changed to one of these and its feels like when i changed from hybrid to road. Fast, very comfortable, same rides faster no back ache. Incredibly light. So far very pleased. By the way there is no connection to the jamis ventura.
  • Further update on this bike. All going extremely well. Changed from triple to compact when i bought this bike. Probably due to my improved fitness and lighter bike i have to say the hills are easier on this than my last bike. I think its great.
  • Thought I'd just rekindle this forum to update the fact these are now £400 and 20% off this week so £320 for one with sora group set, I'm gonna pick one up for a second bike, tomorrow, well aware there not the dogmas b****ks but what the hell, most I can ride is 20ish miles with my prolapsed disks!! https://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stor ... er=3324518

where are you seeing the extra 20%? I can only see it for 399 but at 320 it becomes, well a lot more appealing to give it a try.
    Cheers
  • My mistake it was a store special, I've got one and its good, only done a ten miler as its half term and kids etc but rides well. Sora flight shifters and group set r500 wheels it's not bad
  • Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and interested in one of these bikes.

Is there anyone who would be able to let me know the Effective Top Tube of 55cm bike ?

The effective top tube is measured in centimeters from the middle of the handlebar steerer tube where it joins the frame to the middle of the seatpost with a horizontal (level) line .

I've attached a picture to explain.

    Much thanks for any help,

    Rob
  • Hi Rob,

    It measures at 57.5cm.

  • Hello ralliart_rob,

    That's a pity, it's too big.

I thought this bike was suppose to be a medium, I'm 5'9" with average length everything and I need no more than a 55cm.

Even if took 2cm of the stem it would be a stretch.

The two size for this bike are large and extra large.

    Thanks anyway for your help.

Hi I'm 5.9 and went for the 58 size and it's fine I have done 47 miles this weekend and the bikes fantastic :D
  • I'm 5'7 sometimes 5'8 on a good day and the medium frame is fine for me, where in the world are you? If your midlands way by all means have a test / look at mine
  • Hello 19761980dean,

I'm up in Merseyside, but thanks for the offer anyway.

I've been to a few bike shops and sat on a few bikes, the Cannondale Synapse 54cm and Giant Defy 54.5cm. Both felt about as far as I would want to stretch, maybe it's my age, I'm in my 40's and hadn't sat on a road bike in 20 years.

From ralliart_robs measurement 57.5 it just seems it might be just too much of a stretch.

How does this bike ride? Is carbon as comfortable as many say it is? Have you any other road bikes to compare it to?

What's the box like it comes in, could the box be resealed to look like it hadn't been opened? I feel like ordering one and trying it for size.

Once again thanks for your offer.

The bike comes in a big cardboard box with some heavy duty staples - you can open it neatly, but not in a way that you can close it and make it look unopened.

However, the Argos website says "24 to 29 inch inside leg measurement", which it clearly isn't - so if you don't like it, you can take it back for a refund as it is not as described.
