Rattling in the gearing arm

Ive recently bought myself a New Scott Speedster 60(2013 model) and have been out on it a few times now. For some reason there is a rattling noise coming out or the gear/handle bar that does the changing from 1 to 7. It only makes the noise when i cycle without doing anything. It is ok when i change gears etc.
I have been told by the shop i bought it from that it is a common thing on all road bikes, will have a look at it.
To me this sounds like a load of tosh to me.
Has anyone had this problem and if so what resolved it.
Cheers

Brake cable might be slack, causing the lever to rattle. What make / model of gear levers?Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
