Last week I went out on a ride and got stuck in the small ring because the tension went out of the cable, got back and put it right and it was ok except that it was now rubbing. Managed to get it sorted so the chain wasnt rubbing and went out for a ride this evening only to move down into the small ring and for the tension to go again. The first time it happened it was because the cable had moved out of a little ridge under the bolt but that has not happened this time. Any tips for what to try?

How old/new is your cable. Maybe the cable is frayed somewhere and about to snap if its old?

the entire bike is 500 miles old so shouldnt be an age issue although it is from Halfords...

Is the derailleur sliding down the frame?
