ok so at the moment im running michelin country dry 2's which are great for hard pack and there fast rolling but im starting to venture off the country paths now and need some more grip not looking to spend loads ive pretty much decided based on reviews etc to go with schwalbe nobby nick 2.25 up front but im undecided between the same on the rear or a schwalbe rocket ron 2.25 as ive heard these roll faster?? i can get either tyre for around £20 so its really down to performance.. rolling resistance is as important as grip being a big lad i dont need any extra drag while riding. has/does any1 run these tyre's nobby fr/rr or nobyy fr rocket rr?? how do you find them etc..
many thanks

If you get an NN make sure it's not base or ORC compound, they are pants.....Pacestar is good.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

and even pacestar sucks on anything but hard pack.0

No doubt fine for riding around fields and doubletrack but hopeless if grip is a priority. Nics not too bad providing you stay mostly upright on hardpack but Rons have a lifetime measured in hours (although admittedly they are quite good during those hours).
As above make sure you get the triple compound versions then at least you'll be in with a chance0 -
hmm seems these arnt the best choice after all.... what do you guys suggest then?
budget of around £20 per tyre ride mainly xc trail centre's etc preferably 2.15 / 2.25CUBE ltd 2012,reba sl, XT, saint, DMR, spank, current xc/am ride

I just bought a pair of Bontrager XR3 2.2 Team Issues (folding bead, tubeless ready, 620g each on my scales) for £19.99 each (rrp £35) from All Terrain Cycles. Good all round trail tyre and reasonably fast rolling with their ramped tread blocks. If I hadn't found those I was just about to give the On One Smorgasbord's a try (if they're good enough for the man with the big beard then I'm sure they're more than good enough for my zero talent riding).0

i think in the low £20 a tyre
2.35" 42A minnion and a 60a high roller for the rear from maxxis would be my choice. Go a bit higher and at £30 a tyre which im using currently and love! specialised 2.3 butcher control and purgutory rear0 -
my bike came with high roller and minion didnt like them at all really struggled with drag so i took them off n sold them :?CUBE ltd 2012,reba sl, XT, saint, DMR, spank, current xc/am ride

yup if you want grip you get drag if you want fast you get no grip roughly speaking.
best comprimise for a trail tye so far i have found is the specialised. but your looking at budget end so im scraping my brain for options.0 -
I have just ordered these:

I know a few people who use them and really rate them. These have the black chilli compound so are pretty good value.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

+1, best all round tyre I'v tried.0 -
See i've seen really mixed things about the RK...
bit that really puts me off is the super light sidewalls which apparently don't seal well if your tubeless. but if you got a tube in there at that price i'd have a go.0 -
On my hardtail, I'm running a Conti X-king on the front and a Schwalbe Rocket ron on the rear.
I really rate both these tyres. They work very good in the current conditions and even work well when conditions are intermediate. People think they are hard pack dry weather tyres only but they can cope with more. I've been quite aggressive with the tyres and they've been very predictable and more than enough grip. Its only when I start to get silly do they start to let go but then if you want get silly you probably want a bigger gripper tyre to start of with.
The Schwalbe can be had cheap from the German websites but as said don't go for the cheap plastic compounds.
The Contis are also available for good price from the Germans but I got mine on sale from Wiggle. Personally I'd just for a better front tyre with the recent weather. Maybe some time in the future when things turn wet again you can think about spending more on a new rear tyre too.0
