Anyone else getting a little worried about a washout?

It's great having all this good weather to train in and a cooler day would be ideal for the ride, but am just a bit worried it will pour down on the day after all the sun we are having.

Nothing you can do about except to have the right clothing if the weather does turn.

Don't worry about it, it's too far away for any real predictions to be made on the weather. Enjoy the sunshine and if it rains for the event, then so be it.

If it rains you get wet then dry off, much prefer a bit of rain rather than dry and windy !!! (can't you tell i'm from the North).

It's gonna be a great day regardless of the weather, i'm just going to try and enjoy it through gritted teath (bad tear of my PCL to contend with).
I like shiny bikes - especially Italian ones.....!!

Long term forecast at the moment isn't very clear. They think the current weather may continue, but a change could slowly start to come in from August. So likely it will cool down a bit.

Ultimately if it does rain, you are going to get wet, but given that its still summer and you are going to have your heart rate up, its not much bother as you won't be cold.

The only real concern from rain is that given the number of riders, wet and slick roads will cause the number of accidents to go up significantly.

Metcheck for London and the 4th Aug currently shows a temperature of 20oC with air pressure of 1017, humidity of 76%, and wind speed of 3mph from the north and 0.2mm of rain (i.e. none); however we still have plenty of time for this to all change!

Worry about the things YOU can control. The weather will be what it will be.

Getting wet is not the issue, getting cold is. And in early August I doubt you will get too cold.

Some slightly strange responses to my post guys

I am not a fairweather cyclist and have no prob riding in the rain.
I am not worried in a technical sense (apart from it will be a prob with so many cyclists of varying ability), just that it will spoil the day and will be such a shame after such great weather.

Would you have the same reaction if you were on holiday in Aug and it rained for two weeks after working through a heatwave in July?

Should the kids etc. riding in the Freeride on Saturday have done some wet weather training and too?

Life is like that sometimes. Personally, I just get on and make the best of whatever is thrown at me. It's out of my control, I can't worry about it.

I bought an expensive packable rain jacket, just in case it was wet /cold on the Etape. If it rains on Aug 4th at least it'll get some use!

I've been out in the wind and rain with arm and leg warmers and a gilet on. Worked a treat - hardly got wet and soon dried out but importantly, I didnt get cold.

I take my hat off to your attitude, but there is no way you would not be a bit miffed by such a scenario.
You would not book two weeks off in Aug. if you were completely happy to spend it in the rain.

All I am saying is it will be a bummer. I am not worried about the rain hurting me, I am worried about the day being spoiled, which it undeniably would be.

It would be nice if it was dry but jeez why worry about it? You have no control over it. If the weather spoils your day, then living in the UK you must have an awful lot of spoilt days in any year. Your day will only be spoilt if YOU choose it to be.

38c forecast for next week would be more of a concern but whatever the weather is it won't spoil my day.

Exactly. Rode the Maratona last month and it was snowing in the week leading up to the ride, with most rides done in single figure temps. You can't really plan for that kind of weather in June, but it was what it was. The week, and the ride itself, was still fantastic.

I remember the first sportive I did it rained the whole way round, whilst the second one it snowed for the second half of it. All part of the fun isn't it :)

Some of my best days out riding have been in the pouring rain. It's not going to spoil anything if it rains. Just make it different.

I'm riding LEL next week, something I have been planning and training for the last 3 years really. If it rains, will it spoil it? No. It'll make it different. I have no control over it, I can't worry about it. I have decent wet weather gear and have done some big miles in atrocious conditions this year. I will just have to get on with it and make the best of it. It will still be amazing.

Seems to me like some of you guys just want to be macho about how good a cyclist you are and what great gear you have lol.

I have no prob with riding in the rain and have tonnes of gear for all conditions. I would still think it a shame if weather was great up until the ride and then it pi55ed down on the 4th.

Hey ho, it must just be me then

    Fairweather rider?

If anything going by the weather the last few days, it may be that we see sun breaking through every now and again making it quite warm, but there are likely to be a couple of rain showers which will dry out quick. Probably likely that carrying a rain jacket may be a good idea.

The Met Office 5 day forecast now covers Saturday:

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weat ... p=Rainfall

...so looking good at the moment, if a little windy. But at least that's a tailwind for the last stretch back into London.

so far weather is nothing to worry about although it will be 15C when the event starts. I prefer the warmer weather and once it heats up will be fine

Still looks like this, yay! Today was way too hot and windy, hope it doesn't end up like it was this afternoon.

Yeah I went for a light spin and called it a day earlier than planned as it was just too hot. My Garmin was actually showing 35 degrees, while I was stopped in the shade in Regents Park! The wind really didn't help, but at the sametime would be even hotter if it wasn't blowing.

Glad that Sunday is going to be a bit more marginal, not too hot and not tipping it down with rain.
