Can a 700c 23 wheel be replaced with a 27" wheel?

Bought one of ebay as only had a minute left so went for it luckily very cheap

Probably not - you can often put 700s in bikes designed for 27 as 27 is larger - assuming there is enough adjustment available in the brake block position for them to reach the rim. But a 27 in a bike designed for 700 seems unlikely.

I'd contact the seller and explain your mistake.

yes it should fit but you will need long reach brake calipers to fit

    or try http://singlespeedcomponents.co.uk/

okay, thanks. I have already got 57mm brake calipers which should be okay for this wheel. I have contacted the seller asking for their postcode. If they are super close I will get it anyway (wheel only cost me less than a fiver and looks good)

if quite far away I will apologise and ask to either cancel the transaction or maybe just keep my money and relist

As said, 27" wheel is bigger so unless your frame has very big clearnaces and the brake pads can be adjusted accordingly.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

For interest I did try this out with a 27" wheel on my 700c Dawes frame and it did work as far as clearances go. But this is a touring bike designed to cope with large-ish tyres and it is also from 1990 which may not have been so long after they were fitting the frames with 27s anyway - it may actually be the same frame design as used in previous years. Not sure how much adjustment there is in the brakes which are tricky cantis but it probably could be made to work. For your bike you'd need the brakes to have short reach rather than the long that estampida implies (he thinks you are putting 700s on a bike made for 27" which is a far more common situation - there are many good reasons to put 700s on a bike made for 27s but not really any, aside from your own, to do the reverse!).

But the above is likely to work out very different if your bike is a more modern road bike - clearances will be far lower. I might try the wheel on such a bike later but I'm not optimistic. And even if it does fit, you'll be running different sized wheels and different sized tyres front and back. It seems a compromise not worth taking.
