Organising a Crit

Hi,
We have just been given the go ahead by the local authorities to close the town centre roads in Blandford Forum in Dorset to hold a criterium in April next year. The route will be a one mile circuit with a short fairly steep incline on one side and descent on the other. It should make for good riding.
As this is the first Crit we've organised, is there any hints/tips/wants from those of you who have raced them in the past? We are also trying to organise a Kermasse beforehand on the local Army camp this year, but may run out of time.

Your British Cycling Region will be best placed to help with the organising.0

Town centre crits are very expensive to run, unless you know a good source of free barriers. As above, your region should be helping you with this.0

BCs Regional Events Officer is already involved, he's really helpful as well! Barriers are proving to be a bit of a headache, but the District Council may be helping us with this.0

Barriers will probably be your biggest outlay and it's quite easy to under-estimate the numbers needed for sufficient coverage. Depending on how long you have requested the road closure, I would work on getting as many categories into the day as possible - ie from youth U8-U16, right through to fun/trader races, 3/4, women, and E/1/2/3 - possibly even trikes/handbikes if there is enough interest.0

You want barriers that don't have big feet sticking out on them. Get some straw bales to attach to any street furniture that riders may hit. Try to avoid areas that vehicles may regularly leak oil on the floor such as bus stops and loading bays and make sure there on no low level shops windows that could collect riders if the crash. Can't beat a good town centre crit but they are few and far between outside the big series races now.0

Prize money?? Something to consider.
Sign in / registering??? Maybe web registering??? Day of race register?? Yes / no?
As for the race, get some people who have raced crits to help with ideas about the course.0 -
Thanks for the tips, didn't think of the straw bales, handy as we live in farming country! Guy from British Cycling is coming to look at the route on Monday, he's an ex pro as well, so knows his circuits.
Any more tips gratefully received in the meantime!!0 -
Hold it at night, raced in Bournemouth last night and it was awesome, really glad I had dark lenses in for the last two laps0
