You don't want it too loose or it falls out.
If it's 'too' tight, find one that isn't!
Get a hydration pack anyway, bottles are so 1980's!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

You say the bottle won't fit in the cage, then say it's tight. Can you confirm your cage is open, in that the sides of the cage act like a spring to hold the bottle.Planet X Kaffenback 2

Have you checked that its not upside down (I've actually seen this happen).0

Lol. Nah, in the 80s we were on BMXs. I may have had some neon socks though, lol...0 -

Eighties BMX days rocked. Original old skool bikes go for stupid money now. After my mid teens the BMX just sat in the garage (until it went in a skip) and I didn't sit on a pushbike for over 20 years until a couple of years ago. Bikes with engines seemed much less hard work, lol. As for being a sprog, I wish I was - forty sounds so f*****g old, lol. Never expected to make it to thirty, tbh.0 -
I was born in 86, but still use bottles, hydration packs are a PITA.0

Can easily get away with a bottle cage and a small bag for puncture repairs in the summer months.
Makes some difference on the old back!0 -

You've not got a good PITA-giving in you ;-)
Never really had an issue with mud, yeah you get a bit on the bottle when it's really crappy, but you get mouthfuls of it anyway, never had any ill effects.
Tube & CO2 pump attached to the seatpost, multitool in pocket, no need for any bag, far nicer way to ride.0
