I'm about to spend ten days on holiday just outside St Ives, it's not possible for me to take my bike so does anyone know if there is anywhere I can hire a road bike for a day or two?

If so, what are best places to ride in the area?

I don't know of any road bike hire places in Cornwall, but there are MTB/hybrid bike hire places at either end of the Camel trail at Bodmin and Padstow. There's also a bike hire place at Bissoe, near Redruth which is a bit nearer to St Ives. One of the best road rides in the UK is from St Ives along the coast road to St Just via Zennor. If you hire a hybrid or MTB, I'd recommend exploring the mining trails from Cape Cornwall towards Botallack. Another great place to ride is the mining trails from Porthtowan, Chapel Porth and along to St Agnes - it's quite steep in places and a nice cafe at Chapel Porth. Finally, the tramway trail from Portreath to Devoran is a coast-to-coast route, mainly offroad and well signed.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

May I suggest giving the guys at bissoe a ring, they are all road riders and have links with the local shop in redruth so should be able to help you (can't promise but it's worth a shot).

There's some great cycling in the area you will enjoy it. I suggest a trip up the cliffs to Portreath and then back via four lanes. :)

+1, They've only got a few bottom of the range Giant Defys and mountain bikes, but if you take your pedals they'll put them on a Defy for you and I thought that they were quite cheap.

Definitely check coast route to Portreath, I have done it a few times on hols from Hayle and its great ride out 8)
    Felt AR4
    Planet X Pro Carbon 105
MTB Kona Kikapu Deluxe with a few upgrades!!
  • The bike shop in Hayle has mostly MTB's to hire and 1 road bike. Road over to St Just looks a cracker but has a number of tight, narrow corners, is very poular with tourists and is used by a double decker bus, so take care.
