This could be the best thing ever if done right.
Follow the lead of Singapore. Sell contracts and add huge fines based on target failure and we will never have problems again. It's quite easy if done right.

It won't be. When was the last time anything was done right in this country? ;)

Sure, but remind me- how much over budget was it? Also, what happened with the contracted security firm?

Hardly surprising, the Conservatives want to privatise everything..... Nice big backhanders from privatisation

That article is so socialist it is hilarious.

Anyone who has driven (or cycled) around the French countryside will know that the scenarios suggested are complete rubbish.

    I am all for it.

Matty, I think you will find the last Labour government to be the most corrupt in the history of politics, from passports for Keith Vaz's immigrant staff to Margaret Moran's expenses to dodgy dossiers and Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction. I guess you are too young to have experienced our railways when they were nationalised.

I assume you mean England - we have still to build a suitable barrier with Wales

Will be a disaster for road cyclists as tolls will put more and more drivers onto country lanes.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

I agree that the article holds little to no water but I visit singapore and marvel at the wonderful roads they have and when I asked how it is maintained to such a standard the answer is privatisation.

The government strictly control contracts and if your late or the work is poor you are punished massively and directors cant hide behind a bankrupt firm either, they are ALWAYS accountable.

Not sure they thought that through very well. You would make much more money if it was reversed

    Olympics was ~£400m under budget.
G4S, well, they started charging the government for ASBO tags that the dead were wearing. Probably in an attempt to get back what they were fined for screwing the olympics up.

The original budget was 2.4 billion and was later increased to 9.3 billion. I think that the government trying to take the stance that it came in under budget is really taking the piss.

So many different stats about this but the main one being that it was under budget by £300m which is politics at its best :)
A friend of mine made £30m on a small patch of land he bought and sold within 2 months to be used as part of the olympic park. Trust me, a lot of grease was used to palm hands down London way :)

I never could understand why the Highways agency need top of the range 4x4s, when the RAC and AA cope fine with transit vans.

I'm working for a Tarmac company at the moment on a contract and they tell me that UK roads are built with a 6" depth lasting typically 3-5 years whilst German roads cost 30% more at 9" and last 12-16 years average.

300-400% the lifespan for 130% cost

I don't mind paying high taxes if I get good value for money but... our motorways are great, it's the rest of the network that needs help.

I know, we can pay for it with ASL cameras, cycle lane cameras and aggressive deployment of more cycle lanes and ASLs enforced by cameras and top this up with statutory liability for the motorist in a car vs bike collision whereby the offending motorist must take and pass bike ability, driving theory and practical before being allowed to drive again. If the government want to earn more money from motorists they could monetise helmet cams, providing fines to errant drivers caught by headcam heros and providing a percentage to this to the video vigilante who supplied the footage .
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
