Front Mech issues

My bike will not shift to the little ring.
It is a double (compact) full Tiagra 9sp from about 3.5 years ago.
As far as I can tell the little ring should be the default position, and uses the cable to pull the mech out to the big ring
Completely removed it and cant tell whats wrong.

Any ideas?

Also, how do i convince my missus that a complete Ultegra GS makes more sense than a new mech? haha

So with the cable unclamped at the front mech the cage doesn't sit above the small ring?

Yeah, sits over the big ring instead of the little one.

I would say that it is either gummed up with dirt and needs a clean and lubricate, or it's broke and needs replacing. Take it off and give it a good clean and see if you can move it by hand. If not replace.

Replacing with a full Ultegra GS of course

Unless you've got a sizeable stone stuck in the parallelogram, IME when they start doing that it's time for a new front mech. They are at least fairly cheap components. I have wasted hours of my time and gallons of penetrating fluid and lubricants trying to restore function to reluctant front mechs, only to have them seize up again in a matter of weeks. Cut your losses and replace it. You can then spend the time you've saved riding your bike in the sunshine we seem to be enjoying at the moment.

Surely the first thing to check would be the limit screw to check it's not that stopping it returning. If you've not adjusted it then maybe stiff, seized, broken return spring just generally broken. Good excuse for upgrade.

In all my years of cycling I've never known a limit screw suddenly need adjusting to that extent!

Thanks gang, shall pull the trigger on a new f mech.

Is there an issue with running a 10sp mech with a 9sp double?
until I can afford to upgrade all the things

The manufacturers would say no, but in practice you'll be fine.

    LOL
In all my years of cycling I've never known a limit screw suddenly need adjusting to that extent EITHER.
He didn't say it just went like that if u read my comment properly I said if he hadn't recently adjusted it i.e. just put it on or set it up then that wouldnt be the issue it would be something else.
