Has anyone done any decent teach yourself books/online courses. Looking at self learning conversational Italian because it would make holidays a lot more convenient. I've been looking for them and the number of teach yourself resources is vast. Anyone recommend one from personal experience?

Pretty sure there's a Family Guy episode where Peter speaks Italian. Looks pretty easy:

Get an Italian girlfriend. It worked for me when I was trying to improve my English.
I ended up married and with 2 kids though!x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

I recommend the Michael Thomas course.
I'm a real cynic when it comes to claims about learning languages. The magic solutions typically end up in the DM top five car boot sale items (with exercise equipment, cooking books, cooking gadgets etc). What seems to happen with the Michael Thomas method is that it accelerates your conversational ability, and you can then reel out entire segments of conversation without knowing where the hell it came from. That really gets your morale up, and makes you useful in Italy faster.
The formal stuff can be covered in a course if you want the full grammar immersion. I think the grammar does kill the spirit in the early days (I did courses first).
I've been meaning to sell my set on eBay as I've used them enough now, but I sort of feel loyal to the set so I keep putting it off.0
