Handlebars slipping in stem

Hi all,

This all started out with a 'creaking' I could hear when I first got going from a stationary point (from a set of lights, etc.).

Figured out it was the handlebars that were slipping ever so slightly. Naturally, I've tightened them as much as possible with a multitool (I read that you shouldn't overtighten), but it's started happening again. The bike itself is a Mekk Poggio 2G, and I haven't changed the handlebars or stem.

So, any suggestions, or is it just the case of MTFU and tighten as much as possible?

    Handlebars shouldn't be overtightened, and if you're unsure, not without using a torque wrench.

    You sure they are the source of the noise? creaking from the front of the bike can also be headset related or because the front QR lever isn't tight enough or needs lightly greasing. Wheels themselves can creak a bit too if badly tensioned.

    Have you tried using Loctite on the bolts?

    Mine suddenly started coming loose on my work bike and whenever I tightened them up they were coming loose again a couple of rides later until I used Loctite on them.

    Don't assume. It could be the headset, STIs or anything - as said above don't tighten them up without a torque wrench either.
