I have a triban 3 2011 model which currently has a shimano sora triple groupset, I have been given a shimano 105 groupset excluding the crankset, he said I can have that when he upgrades his to dura-ace. At the moment what components can I use on my triban from the 105 groupset. I assume the brakes will be an easy swapover and the rear derailleur and cassette will be compatible but Im not sure about the front derailleur.

Any advice will be much apreciated,

thanks Sam

What is the 105 stuff he has given you? i assume its 10 speed cassette (and shifters) and 2 chainrings?

Your Sora triple is 8or 9 speed i think, and you have confirmed its a triple?

so until you get the crankset you can't swap triple to compact so unless you want odd shifters you can change the right hand shifter and cassette either.

You could do the rear deraileur and brakes. Front deraileur probably not as you need bigger capacity for triple froma double / compact I think.

Assuming its not long I'd wait for the crankset and do it in one go.

The sora is a triple and 7 speed. the 105 is 10 speed, my only problem is that the front brake wont work? not sure why but for cable is tight at the brake but the shifter is very loose? possibly a snapped cable?

Which shifter are we talking about? The s/h 105 one? Did it come with the cables attached?

the sora shifter doesnt work. I started to change the brakes myself yesterday and when i noticed that the cable was starting to fray where the brake clamps it i decided to not bother trying to change it, when i put the sora brakes back on the sora right shifter was very loose even though the front brake cable had a lot of tension at the brake

Unclamp the cable at the caliper end. Pull it tight and pull on the brake lever. Can you feel the lever pulling the cable? If not, it's either stuck in the outer somewhere or frayed / broken inside the shifter.

Either way you need to remove it, and since you say it's frayed at the end I'd consider fitting a new one.

I cant feel the lever pulling however I do see the cable twitch a little when i pull the lever? I might remove the outer sleeve and check to see if it stuck there?
