Recently my chain broke/bent as I was riding. I proceded to get a new chain and fit it with great trouble, only to find my rear derailleur is not working. The top jockey wheel is touching the fastening nut to the frame?, is my derailleur broke or am I missing something.

I'm not that mechanically minded but isn't that part sprung loaded and if you reattach it to the frame with new chain and reintroduce the wheel then it will open out as intended?

Minus the chain it looks almost exactly as the wife's did when I took off the wheel to transport it to our Norfolk holiday.

Ok I have managed to put it back on and reconnect the chain and it works sort of, all the indexing is out and it sounds pretty rough, will just have to see how it goes, to tired to bother now and to hot.

Why did you remove the rear mech in the first place? And have you been fiddling with the limit screws? There is no obvious reason why the indexing should be out unless you have been messing with things you shouldn't have been messing with!

Have you threaded the chain back through the rear mech correctly? Sounds a stupid question, but I for one have on occasion (haste / tiredness / alcohol / failing eyesight / poor lighting etc) managed to run the chain outside the little tab on the upper jockey wheel. That makes it run rougher than a badgers @rse and would certainly affect indexing!

The other question is have you correctly located the rear mech so the B screw is able to contact the little projection on the mech hanger? Failure to do this could cause unusual behaviour too.
