I did have an order in for a Scott Scale 960 with Evans but they have now discontinued the small size just before my cycle to work voucher was issued
After talking with there sales staff he suggested looking at a 650b instead of a 29 er due to my hight (5ft 6  ) this was his recommendation:

You need to ride both - you may find a 29er too big for you, standover height (height between your legs) can be an issue for some

Standover height is irrelevant. Your height doesn't limit your choice of wheel size, the bits in between the wheels are still the same size and bottom bracket height is the same. Go for what feel best to ride.
650B tyre choices are limited and most people cant tell the difference between 650B and 26" when riding.

650b tyres are available from all manufacturers pretty much now so the choice is fine. Size size 29ers have limits but you're well inside them. The only thing to do is ride them to tell. The nice thing about 650b is that you can't really tell the difference between 650 and 26 until you change back to a 26. The progression is very natural.

Evan's have offered me a £100 in compensation if I stay with them, but there's not a lot around @ £1000 in small sizes this year :(

    Standover height is irrelevant.

Next time Little Rockmonkey takes a hit off of the top tube I ll remind you of that statement ;)

Im 5'7" and tried a small frame 29er 15" and didnt feel right, think it was trying to squeeze the bike into too small a frame, the next size up was way too big 17". Ive tried a 17" 650b frame and it fits perfect so im going for that. Not sure the geometry issues or whatever who how the same size 650b frame fits but the 29er doesnt, it just does

    Hi,

I'm considering the Mantle 30 as well. Can you let me know how you've found it? Not managed to get a test ride on one yet. I'm 5'8" so thinking about the 17.5 rather than the 16. what did you go for?

    Cheers.

I'm 5' 9.5" I have a 17.5" this is good for me, at 5' 8" you may find the top tube slightly long. You could always fit a shorter stem, which I was considering doing.
