New to the forum and already a question about spoke length

Hi everybody,

I'm new to the forum and already need some help / advice.

A bit about me. I'm 'chunky' lets say at around 100kg. I commute to work almost everyday which is an 18 mile round trip. I have a Kona Dr Dew bike which takes a battering in wind rain ice and snow (and sometimes the sunshine). I have to admit to not looking after it very well in the first 18 months. When I took it into my local bike shop it cost me well over £200 to put it right. I've since bought the Park Tools Big Blue Book with the intention of doing most of the work myself. However, that does not include wheel building (well not yet) and that's where I need some help. Having inspected my rear wheel I have various stress cracks around the rims by the spoke nipples. It's time for a new set front and back. The Kona has disc brakes and 700c wheels (100mm front hub and 135mm rear). I can't find wheels I like so have decided to have some built.

I have decided upon

Hope Pro 2 Evo Front (32)and back (36) hubs (QR)
Mavic TN719 29er rims

Using the HOPE website I have established the dimensions of the hubs as

Front - Hub Diameter - Left =56 Right =54
Flange Distance - Left = 20 Right = 33

Rear - Hub Diameter - Left =56 Right =54
Flange Distance - Left = 33 Right = 20

From various forums and the DT Swiss spoke calculator I believe the Mavics have an ERD of 603.

Now - I've used a couple of different calculators and have come up with -
Front - Left= 291.30 Right= 292.80 (rounded to 291 and 293
Rear - Left= 289.10 Right= 288.30 (rounded to 289 and 288

I have been looking at Rosebikes as their prices seem very good. The only problem is they do not have the DT Swiss spokes in 291 and 293. I think I maybe OK with 292 for the front. They have 290 and 288 so the back wheel is ok.

So my questions are,
1-have I got the correct dimensions for the hubs and rims
2-have I got the sums right
3-can I use 292 instead of 291 and 293 (that's if I've got it right in the first place)

Thanks for any help received.

Jerry

You really want to measure the rims instead of relying on the manufacturer numbers. They're not always that great.

I would but I don't have them yet. Parcel force does. I know that mavic appear to use a completely different measurement to everyone else. I've not used mavics own dimensions but I have read on other forums that they are 603 and that seems to be backed up by the auto fill feature on the DT Swiss spoke calculator.

OK, I have the rims and have measured them. I also make the ERD 603 (one measurement was 602 and one was 604 but the rest were 603). DP Swiss shows 291.30(291), 292.80(293), 289.10(289) and 288.30(288) - The rounded figures are in the brackets. Would I be able to use 292(for the 291 & 293) and 290(for the 289).

    Regards

    You're not supposed to round further than 1mm so... 292 for the 291.30(291), 292.80(293) and 290 and 288 for 289.10(289) and 288.30(288)

That's what I thought. I've ordered them now so I will see how it goes. Thanks.

Well wheels have been made and they are fantastic. I took the opportunity to clean up and check the cassette and install a new chain. I even managed to tweak the derailleurs and it's running beautifully. I took it out for a spin today to check it all out. I am well chuffed, and if I could work out how to load photos, I might even take a few.

Already? Too soon! No questions on spoke length until you've made at least 500 posts.....
