I am looking to change my shimano13/26 cassette for a 12/28 or similar. I have a shimano 2300 RD. Tried this before and the RD was rubbing but I think it was broken hence wanting a new RD as well.

Any suggestions for a compatible RD and cassette. Cheaper the better ideally.

thanks a lot

A couple have used a 28 on a 2300 and got it to work, check the shimano technical docs and it states on there max teeth each RD can use. I think sora was 27 with new tiagra 30.

Yeah I've been told it should work BUT I'm almost positive my 2300 RD is knackered as the b-set screw doesn't do anything now (when it used to)

thanks. going to order a sora 3500 9 speed - discounted and very cheap. Can get a short cage or medium cage what would you recommend? Going to be fitting an 11-28 cassette with it.

    thanks

Short cage will be fine as it has a 37T capacity. Assuming you have a compact 50-34 then thats 16T difference. Rear cassette has a 17T difference. You therefore need a 17T + 16T = 33T capacity as a minimum.

Saying that - its no issue if you go for the medium (41T capacity) cage anyway. It'll be hardly any heavier and you wont be so close to the limits of the capacity. Only downside really is that it will extend a little lower - and statistically more likely to hit something.
