Bike buying dilemma

Am stuggling to recommend a bike for my brother who is getting into riding after 15 years off bikes. I know that if I could only have one bike it would be 160mm, but for an inexperienced rider? On the one hand, he's not going to be flying through rough stuff straight away, and will do a fair amount of tamer stuff (eg trail centres), so maybe a trail bike like a Zesty. On the other hand, he is going to be riding that rough stuff (mountains, Innerleithen etc) with much better riders, so could do with all the help he can get, so maybe something like a Spicy.
Any thoughts on this?

Budget?
I'd really suggest starting with a hardtail.....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Around £2k. I cast my mind back to when I got back into bikes, I got a hardtail and had great fun but after a year was wanting something more capable. Plus the key difference here is that he will be riding with better riders on tough descents straight away (albeit slowly at first). I found I had a lot of the core offroad skills from messing about in the woods as a kid, I expect he will be the same.0
