Fulcrum 5 Freehub Woes
My well taken care of Fulcrum 5 have a minute amount of play in the freehub. Only just noticed it whilst changing the cassette.
The hub bearings are otherwise smooth with no play in the axle. Just interested in others peoples' experiences with this wheel. If there's anything that could be done to fix it.
The wheels are in quite good condition having probably around 5000 miles on them and are around 2 years old. They're my best wheels so well taken care of

There are a number of service documents on the Fulcrum website here:

One of these will probably help you fix the play.0 -
Had similar on mine - I removed the freehub and tried just the axle in it - it wobbled considerably more than I would've thought correct - so took it to the LBS and they changed the bearings in the Freehub & checked the wheel bearings at the same time. One set of bearings in the freehub were brown sludge - not too bad, but needed changing - the rest were fine (but they changed the freehub bearings completely).
Result - the cassette still "wobbles" slightly, but nowhere near as bad as it did before - actually I remember why I took it in - there was a definite clunk as I put lots of power down ... there isn't now.0 -
@jimwin
Thanks but I've been following this:

Fairly simple procedure.
@Slowbike
If I remove the freehub there's no play in the axle, so it must be the freehub because it's the only thing playing.
Any idea how to get to the bearings of the freehub? There's brown sludge coming out from mine too.
The freehub shouldn't wobble. I would find any such wobble unacceptable on these wheels.
I would also dread to think if the more expensive wheels R0/1/3 use the same freehub as this one.0 -
I poked the axle through the freehub and felt the wobble there.
The bearings are cartridge bearings that need to be pressed/dragged out - I didn't have the wherewithall to do that so I left that to the shop to do!0 -
So you had the cartridge bearings inside the freehub replaced and there is still a minute amount of play in the freehub?
Why, oh Why???0 -
6901 2rs bearings for the f/h x 2
However, the inner bearing is - on my 2012 wheels - locked in plc by a circlip which is not easy to remove - involves drilling a hole in the free hub, to release from grov - so highly unlikely LBS removed this bearing, hence a little play?
The outer one just drifts out - fulcrum remove inner seals and pack f/h with grease.
There should be no play after this - wheel uses 6001 2rs x 2 easy peasy to replace.
F0/1 s use same design but different bearings.0
